As we ring in the new year, this episode focuses on how people in the HVAC/R trade can get a raise, promotion, or bonus without facing rejection or sounding selfish.
Before you think about asking for a raise or promotion, evaluate your company. Is your company pragmatic? Does the company refuse to address conflict or let tempers run high? Do your leaders care about making decisions logically and promote people who will truly help the business? A pragmatic company makes logical decisions and respects the employees who keep the business alive.
Many people want to ask for a raise when they find out that someone earns more than them or feel as though they haven't had a review in a while. People in these situations feel as though they are OWED additional pay.
Here's Bryan's advice: DON'T ask for a raise, promotion, or bonus unless you have a written salary agreement that hasn't come to fruition. When you ask a leader for a raise, you make your leaders put their guard up. In general, it's not a good idea to make someone else put their guard up when communicating with them.
If you want to talk to a leader about a plan to earn more money in the future, try to explain your vision of the future for the company; solve a company problem, or contribute to a leader's solution. Avoid self-assessments; talk about a plan or vision where YOU play an integral part in improving the company. Tie YOUR pay to the company's success, whether your solution addresses revenue, callbacks, or training within the organization.
Overall, you have to show that you're willing to accomplish a task to earn more pay. A pragmatic business will see the value in your ideas and will be more willing to give you a raise, promotion, or bonus after you execute your plan.
